The Apostasy of the Reprobate

It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.
— Heb. 6:4-8

I believe that this is speaking of a very distinct scenario where a non-elect person becomes reprobate, which means they are turned over to their sin after first tasting, then mocking the grace of salvation. I do not believe a true believer can lose their salvation. But there is a serious warning here. Just because you are in the garage, it doesn't make you a car. Just because you go to church, it doesn't make you a Christian.

Why does it shock you when people leave Christ? Many left him in the gospels and no longer followed him after he told them hard things that they didn't want to hear. Jesus himself said:

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
— Matthew 7:21-23

Let us continue in faith and faithfulness and show ourselves to be very far from these warnings for reprobate hypocrites!
