Do You Really Know Him?

So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father”? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”?
— Hebrews 1:4-5

What do you actually know about Christ other than that he was born in a manger and died on a cross with some cool miracles in between? The writer’s first argument is not only to say that Jesus is “better” than the angels, but to fundamentally elevate our understanding of Christ from the category of “created and lesser than God the Father” to “creator and equal with God the Father”. This matters. We are monotheists who believe that our one God exists in three persons and Christ is the second of this trinity of persons. We already argued from verse three that he was of the exact same being as the Father was, and yet from these verses we understand that Christ is a distinct person who carries out at times different roles. When people ask me where is the trinity in the Bible, my simple response is: “everywhere!”

The Question of whether Jesus was worthy of worship divided both the Christians from the Jews, and the true believers from the Arian heretics in the early church. Arius was a presbyter or elder in the church who advocated that Jesus was a created being who was something less than the Father, and therefore should not be worshipped in the same way as God the Father. Modern theology found in the unitarian universalist church, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons is very similar if not identical to aspects of Arian theology. We must defend the truth of orthodoxy at all costs. The greatest champion of orthodoxy against the Arians in his day (4th century) was Athanasius, the Bishop of Alexandria in Egypt. He was called by his opponents the “Black Dwarf” for his small stature and dark skin and he was exiled 5 times by 4 Roman Emperors for his opposition to the Arians. He never backed down, even when at several points the majority were against him, he knew what was at stake! Do you know the deep and glorious truths concerning the nature of Christ that heroes of the past were persecuted and even martyred for?

So we should worship Christ because he was active in creation, we should worship Christ because He remains the same and has no beginning or end, we should worship Christ because God the Father has and will continue to put all His enemies in subjection to Him like a footstool, and these honors were never given to angels or to any other created being! Do you even understand? This Jesus has called you to be his son and daughter, His duke or duchess, His royal ambassador to the nations, His treasurer, His secretary of the Interior, if He is a glorious King and He died on a cross to save you, you have been so loved and elevated, and commissioned to higher things!

In Prayer Today:

Let us find a great, new identity in the being, person, and work of Christ!
