Captives of Christ

You are the captives of Christ.  Let this be your strength and consolation today.

But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.” (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)
— Ephesians 4:7-10

Our brother in the faith John Donne, wrote about this reality in his Holy Sonnet #14:

“Batter my heart, three-personed God; for you
As yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise, and stand, o’erthrow me, and bend
Your force to break, blow, burn, and make me new
I, like an usurpt town to’another due,
Labor to’admit you , but oh, to no end,
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captived, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly’I love you, and would be loved fain,
But am betrothed unto your enemy:
Divorce me, untie, or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I
Except you’enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me”

In Prayer Today:
Seek, knock, and ask him to enthrall you, that nothing else might be in His place.
