A Win for the Enemies of God

And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel [army] had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook their cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them. On the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilbo’a. And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armor [they stripped him and took his head and his armor], and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines, to carry the good news to their idols and to the people. They put his armor in the temple of Ash’taroth; and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan [And they put his armor in the temple of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon].
— 1 Sam . 31:7-10 [With Additions from 1 Chronicles]

Sometimes we look around and it seems like the enemies of God are winning in the cosmic battle for souls in our local territory, wherever and whenever that may be. And it is true that Satan can get the upper hand, at least in appearance, especially when the righteous are self-reliant vs. Christ-reliant.

Let's be honest, we are all sinners, and we all want to give up at times. But we must not give up. We must keep fighting, for the dawn is coming. The righteous light of Christ is waxing over all the earth, and soon, his glory will cover the earth as the waters cover the seas! The victory of Christ is ultimately not thwarted by our sin.

Saul's disobedience and death was indeed a day of victory and rejoicing for the enemies of God (the Philistines, specifically, in this case), but it was only a temporary setback for the growth and advance of the kingdom of God. Soon, righteous David would be on the throne, the true and rightful Shepherd-King of Israel, and soon after that, even in the wake of David's failures, Jesus the Messiah would come and inaugurate His kingdom that is without fail or flaw. Your fellow man will let you down every time (even Christians), but Christ will never fail you, and is where your faith must lie.

Earthly inaugurations are what they are, but none compares to the inauguration of Jesus' reign on earth in the resurrection, which is bringing resurrection life to all and is coming to complete victory by the time He returns one day. Our role is to trust and obey our risen Christ as His people. We must not be self-reliant as Saul was, but rather depend, rely, and trust in the grace of the Lord Jesus everyday of our lives, it is our only hope...it is your only hope.

In Prayer Today:

Acknowledge to your Savior-King that you can do nothing apart from him, but all things IN HIM!
