The gospel is a message.
The gospel is a message of good news.
The gospel is the message of the good news centering on Jesus Christ, that he is both king and savior of all the world. By His power, he can defeat the demons in our lives, by his grace (undeserved favor), He can forgive us of our sins, once and for all, and by His love, he can renew our hearts, and change the direction and desires of our lives forever, toward Himself.
But don’t take it from me. Come to your own conclusion from the text itself. Determine for yourself the meaning of the word “Gospel” as it is used in the New Testament (King James Version), some potentially helpful questions are added after the Bible verse in italics in parentheses:
- Matthew 4:23_And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. (Is the gospel then about a king and a kingdom?)
- Matthew 9:35_And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.
- Matthew 11:5_The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
- Matthew 24:14_And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
- Matthew 26:13_Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. (So the gospel is a message that is proclaimed?)
- Mark 1:1_The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. (Are then facts about Jesus Christ the content of the gospel?)
- Mark 1:14_Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,
- Mark 1:15_And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. (Since Repentance and Faith are proper responses to the gospel, they can’t actually be the gospel themselves, right?)
- Mark 8:35_For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it. (is the gospel worth dying for?)
- Mark 10:29_And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, 30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.
- Mark 13:10_And the gospel must first be published among all nations. (So the gospel is a verbal message?)
- Mark 14:9_Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her. (So the original gospel is what would be proclaimed in all the world?)
- Mark 16:15_And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
- Luke 4:18_The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

- Acts 15:7_And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. (So the Gospel is something that you believe?)

- Acts 20:24_But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. (Does this gospel have something to do with “the grace of God”?)
- Romans 1:1_Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God. (Is the gospel something important about God Himself?)
- Romans 1:9_For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; (Does this mean that “Jesus” is “God”?)

- 1 Corinthians 15:1_Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures. (So if you believe it you are saved, and it has to do at least with Jesus’ death and resurrection?)

This wonderful, joyous message that Jesus is King and Jesus is Savior must be responded to somehow. Either you will disbelieve these things about Jesus, or you will believe them. And if you believe, you will raise your open hands to God, letting go of your rebellion against Him, and call upon his name, and surely, He will save you. Ask yourself, “Am I ready to surrender to Jesus, who is God, as my King? Am I ready to trust in Christ alone to forgive and cleanse me, that I might be with God forever?” If you are, tell Him. He’s listening, right now.
